Esther Vilalta is a professor of Civil Law at the UOC, a fellow of the National Center for Technology & Dispute Resolution (NCTDR – University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA), and a member of both the European Law Institute (ELI) and the International Mediation Institute (IMI). She collaborates with the Digital Society: Security and Protection of Rights Scientific Excellence Unit at the University of Granada and also works in an advisory capacity with government bodies.

She has practised as a lawyer, she is an alternate judge at the Provincial Court of Barcelona, and she is also an accredited mediator and international arbitrator. She has acted as Spain’s delegate at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law as an expert in its working group on cross-border online dispute resolution (UNCITRAL WG III). She specializes in civil and comparative law in areas related to e-procurement, consumer affairs and effective access to justice (A2J), using alternative and online dispute resolution (ADR/ODR) mechanisms along with information and communication technologies (artificial intelligence, blockchain and preventive tools) to reach out-of-court settlements. Her eLearnCourt project provides online training for expert mediators and arbitrators.
