Algorithmic awareness

Algorithmic awareness is the sensitivity that is needed in order to identify how we are affected by the algorithms we interact with in our everyday lives. A lack of algorithmic awareness increases the digital divide and inequalities in society. The better we understand these algorithms, the more information we will have to help us make the most of the advantages provided by digital technologies. Algorithmic awareness studies assess the impact of such awareness on society and how we can help reduce the gap in this awareness

Digital citizenship

Digital citizenship is the ability to participate in the data society. It includes having material access to an internet connection and devices, the digital skills required to use the related services, and the digital skills gap. It is therefore related to the impact of digital inequalities on society, because digital technologies, data, algorithms and other kinds of (semi-)automated systems are increasingly important in our digital societies.

Social challenges in data societies

Data societies face the challenge of the impact of stereotypes and design biases on algorithm-based automated decisions. The ultimate aim is to theorize on the fairness of data and the distribution of power, particularly in relation to age discrimination (ageism), and to understand how the indiscriminate use of big data reinforces stereotypes and discrimination and how automated decisions deprioritize, ignore or disempower minorities and the most disadvantaged groups.
