Joan Pujolar (Olot, 1964) has a degree in Anglo-German Philology (1987) and Catalan Philology (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 1988), an MA (1991) and a PhD (1995, University of Lancaster). He is a full professor of Sociolinguistics and the current director of the doctoral programme in Humanities and Communication at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. He is the director of the research group on Language, Culture and Identity in the Global World. He has been president of the Catalan Sociolinguistic Society (2013-2019) and vice-president of the COST Network on "New Speakers in a Multilingual Europe" (2013-2017). His research focuses on how the use of language is mobilized in the construction of identities, and its implications for accessing symbolic and economic resources. He has carried out research on the use of Catalan in young people, immigrants and the economic sector, especially in the context of tourism and heritage, and in the framework of multilingualism and gender. He is currently co-directing a research-action project aimed at overcoming linguistic inequalities.
