Joan Miquel Gomis is an associate professor in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) and a researcher in the university's New Perspectives on Tourism and Leisure (NOUTUR) research group, the objective of which is to analyse the impacts that tourism and leisure activities have on the contexts of destinations (territories), organizations and consumption patterns (tourists and residents). He also has a PhD from the Department of Economics and Business Organization at the University of Barcelona (UB) and a bachelor's degree in Information Sciences from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).

As a researcher, his R&I activity is focused on studying the improvement of the sustainability of tourism organizations, mainly through the analysis of innovation and technologies.

His main research interests are in the fields of ICT and tourism, responsible tourism, tourism marketing processes (especially intermediary services) and educational innovation in tourism.

Gomis has been the editor of the economics, business and society journal Oikonomics (https://oikonomics.uoc.edu/) since it was founded in 2014.

In the period from 2000 to 2003, he was deputy editor of the weekly tourism trade journal Editur. In the period from 2005 to 2010, he was vice president of the association Turisme Just, which he co-founded with Carlos Tudurí to promote more responsible and sustainable tourism through publications, awareness-raising campaigns and training.

Lines of research

Sharing economy and tourism

Through the EPTUR (2021-2024) and ECCOLTUR (2018-2020) R&I projects carried out by the UOC's NOUTUR group with Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation funding, the adaptive processes and impacts of the tourism platform economy in a context of change are currently being analysed from the perspective of the development, competitiveness and sustainability of tourism destinations and organizations.

New technologies applied to tourism

Based on the diagnosis and preparation of reports, in collaboration with Barcelona Provincial Council, this line focuses on the situation of Barcelona's tourist destinations in relation to tourist intelligence, evaluating the categories and models of the type of actions implemented.

Analysis of the effects of information technologies on the transformation of the marketing processes of tourism destinations and organizations.

Teaching activities

Teaching areas

Since joining the UOC in 2004, Professor Joan Miquel Gomis has developed his teaching activity within the framework of Economics and Business Studies, basically in the field of Tourism. During this long period, he has been responsible for subjects related to the management of companies in the sector, especially in areas of quality, innovation, commercialization and application of technology. In addition, he has been responsible for the Business Practices subjects of the degree. In recent years, he has also oriented his teaching in the field of sustainability and its relationship with destination management and public management.

His teaching has been developed mainly in the degree (previously a diploma) in Tourism and in the Master's in Tourism, Sustainability and ICT. He is currently the professor responsible for the following degree subjects: "Public Tourism Management", "Tourism Intermediation", "Final Degree Project: Business Plan" and "Business simulation in tourist organisations". In the master's degree on sustainable tourism and ICT, he is responsible for the subjects "Sustainability and Tourism" and "ICT applied to marketing", in addition to tutoring students in different final master's projects.

Responsibilities

In the period 2006-2017 he was academic director of the Tourism diploma and after the degree in Tourism. He has also been academic coordinator (2006-2008) and academic co-director (2008-2010) of the Master's Degree in Management in Policy and Strategy of Tourist Destinations organised jointly by the UOC and the World Tourism Organization, a specialised agency of the United Nations. In this same period (2006-2010) he was also academic co-director of the postgraduate course in "Management and Marketing of Tourist Organizations" organised jointly by the UOC and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB).

He is currently the academic director of the area of continuous training in the field of Tourism at the UOC.

Teaching innovation

Professor Joan Miquel Gomis has especially oriented teaching innovation in the integration of theory with practice to improve the academic performance and/or skills of the student body. Along these lines, in 2008 he worked on the teaching innovation project financed by the Generalitat through an MQD (Improving Teaching Quality) to develop a subject of virtual practices for the Diploma in Tourism, at a time when modalities such as those of the current telework were not yet sufficiently developed. Subsequently, in 2010, with internal funding from the UOC, he led the project for the application of software that facilitated business simulations in the field of tourism marketing in the Practicum subject of the Degree in Tourism and also of the Master's in Tourism , sustainability and ICT. More recently, it has also introduced business simulation in the field of hotel management in a degree course. On these issues, which propose the practical application of theoretical concepts through learning by doing (learn by doing), he has presented the results of the application of these methodologies in congresses.
