Marc Balcells' R&D activities focus on crimes against cultural heritage and their fit within transnational crime (organized crime, terrorism) and international crime (war crimes against cultural heritage).

More specifically, he is an expert in the criminological analysis of archaeological looting and the illegal trade in this type of heritage. This criminological analysis is based on the figure of the plunderer of tombs and archaeological sites. He has also conducted research into other crimes against cultural heritage, including the theft and forgery of works of art. Other areas of interest in his research are organized crime, the history of criminology and crime, and the history of cybercrime.
