My profile

Eduard Aibar is a full professor of Science and Technology Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and also a member of the MUSSOL Philosophy for Contemporary Challenges research group. He has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Barcelona (UB). He teaches on the bachelor's degree in Humanities, the bachelor's degree in Anthropology and Human Evolution, the master's degree in Philosophy for Contemporary Challenges and the university master's degree in History of the Contemporary World at the UOC. He has been a postdoctoral researcher at Maastricht University (Netherlands), the University of Salamanca and the University of Barcelona. He was vice president for Research at the UOC from 2005 to 2009 and director of the UOC's Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) and director of the Information and Knowledge Society doctoral programme in other periods. He has conducted research mainly on social aspects of science and technology, in the field of Science & Technology Studies (STS). He has recently focused on the study of open science and technology, analysing the ideology of innovation, and has led two research projects on the role of Wikipedia in the public communication of science and in university teaching.

Lines of research

The ideology of innovation

The current focus on innovation greatly restricts the way we understand technology, its social role and its relationships with other fields. What consequences is this ideology having on education, culture and science? How does it relate to other ideologies such as neoliberalism, the so-called Californian ideology and technological solutionism? What forms of resistance are emerging?

The commodification/privatization of science

The impact of neoliberal policies and practices is causing the most significant structural transformation of contemporary science and academia since the mid-20th century. What are the most important mechanisms for privatizing scientific knowledge? How do they work? What are the epistemic effects of these practices on specific scientific fields? What is happening in the humanities and the social sciences? How do scientists view these transformations?

Science and technology in contemporary society
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the interactions between science and technology and various social domains – a field of study usually referred to as Science and Technology Studies (STS) and which primarily involves sociologists, historians, philosophers, political scientists, anthropologists and economists. The main objective of the course is to equip students with the analytical techniques and concepts that will enable them to critically evaluate the social impacts of science and technology, as well as the numerous public controversies that surround them.
